Why is the short Inca Trail the best alternative to 4 Day Inca Trail?

Thursday, 17 November, 2022 | Sin categoría | 0 Comentarios

The Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a great way to explore this ancient Inca citadel. Taking the Inca Trail can be intimidating for some people. Specially when considering how many days of hiking are required to reach Machu Picchu. Both the shorter Inca Trail and the longer 4-day Inca Trail can be used to go to Machu Picchu.

Although both pathways are well-liked by hikers, some may favour the shorter Inca Trail. The 2 day Inca Trail requires less time and offers the same wonderful experience as the longer Inca Trail of 4 days.

What is the Short Inca Trail?

The short Inca Trail is a 12-kilometre (7-mile) trip that can be completed in just two days. Compared to the Classic Inca Trail, there won’t be as many people around. Also, you can still enjoy the natural scenery, lush forests, historical ruins, and plants and animals.

Machu Picchu citadel

The short Inca Trail typically begins at the 104 Km mark along the railway from Cusco. From there, you must climb steadily upward for more than 4 hours to reach the Wiñay Wayna ruins and another 3 to 3.5 hours to get to Machu Picchu.

After experiencing all of Machu Picchu’s splendour and admiring the breathtaking views from the Sun Gate (Intipunku), you will have to descend to the small town of Aguas Calientes. You will spend the night here, where you will also enjoy a delicious dinner and get ready for the next day. This means that you will have to hike for about 8 hours on the first day.

Inca terraces at Machu Picchu

You will visit Machu Picchu the next day. The Puente Ruinas checkpoint is about a 30-minute walk away, and it takes roughly an hour of stair climbing to get there from there to the main gate of Machu Picchu. This is often the start of the 2.5-hour guided tour of Machu Picchu, during which you can discover all there is to know about the legendary Inca city. You can also explore Machu Picchu on your own before returning to Aguas Calientes, where your hike ends.

Why is the short Inca Trail the best alternative to 4 Day Inca Trail?

The short Inca Trail is the best alternative to the 4-day Inca Trail because it takes less time while providing the same tranquil atmosphere.

Stone buildings at Machu Picchu citadel

Also, the 4-Day Inca Trail is about 42 kilometres (26 miles) long, requiring you to hike for about 8 hours per day. Meaning it is a fantastic option for individuals who are only visiting Peru for a short time or who are not in good physical shape.

The 4-Day Inca Trail will also challenge you to reach higher altitudes, such as the Dead Woman’s Pass, the greatest point of the hike at 4215 meters, which will be difficult for some. And because it only requires one day of hiking and the next day is spent exploring Machu Picchu, the shorter Inca Trail is the best alternative for the 4 Day Inca Trail for single travellers, couples, friends, and families with young children.

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Packing List

Monday, 14 November, 2022 | Sin categoría | 0 Comentarios

On this article we suggest some articles you will need to include in your packing list to the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. All of us have the Inca Trail on our bucket lists because it is such an incredible experience to hike it, discovering the subtle trails and Inca ruins as you ascend the stunning Andean mountains to the legendary Machu Picchu at the end.

But for the majority of us, acclimating to the weather and the surroundings can be a little difficult. It is always preferable to be prepared for the worst so that you can make the Inca Trail an unforgettable experience.

We’ve put together the ultimate Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Packing List so that you don’t forget any essential items.

Clothing

Remember to take clothing that is comfortable but can be layered up because as you go up the mountains it will be very cold/or sunny depending on the sudden weather changes. Take both short-sleeved and long-sleeved tops, long pants and shorts, jackets, raincoats, ponchos, sweaters, socks and plenty of underwear! Hats, gloves and scarves may come in handy when you are hiking at night.

Footwear

If you are considering hiking shoes/boots it would be great but make sure they are waterproof. You cannot exactly predict the weather during the Inca Trail hike but the higher chances are for rain, the paths will be muddy and wet so you need to be prepared with good supportive and waterproof shoes.

Toiletries

You will be hiking the Inca Trail for up to 4 days, so that means the journey won’t be very easy. There are no shops to buy anything on the way. You have to make sure you have everything you need when it comes to toiletries – toilet paper, wet wipes, hair brush, shampoo (if needed), soap, deodorants, toothbrush, toothpaste, sunscreen etc.

Food/snacks

If you have booked your Inca Trail hike through a reputable company, it is more likely that food and water are included in your price. However, it is always a good idea to carry water in reusable bottles, take some chocolate (this helps with altitude sickness), protein bars and biscuits.

 First-aid kit

Once again, if you have booked your Inca Trail hike through a reputable company, it is more likely that there will be a first-aid kit. But you can also take your first aid kit, including your medications, bandages, gloves, gauze, antiseptic wipes, altitude sickness medications and so on.

Travel documents

Don’t forget to take your passport when going on the Inca Trail hike. Every tourist starting the hike must present a passport to the governmental checkpoint at the beginning of the trail.  The purpose is to maintain the restrictions on the number of tourists who can take the trail every day so that it is protected. Just in case, you should also carry copies of your health insurance and emergency contact information.

Other essentials

Some of the other essentials that you might need to include in your packing list are sleeping bags, flashlights, cameras, camera batteries, power banks, mosquito repellents and some cash in hand so that you can pay for the porters or guides who lead the way.

5 Animals in Tambopata Peru

Tuesday, 8 November, 2022 | Sin categoría | 0 Comentarios

The Tambopata National Reserve, which is easily accessible through Puerto Maldonado, is one of the best places to see wildlife in the Peruvian Amazon Jungles. Some endangered species are among the animals of Tambopata.

With more than 160 species of mammals, 100 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 170 species of birds, it will be a great wildlife experience for you. Here we have listed the top 5 animals in Tambopata you will see when you are there!

Black caiman

The Black Caiman is one of the commonly seen animals in Tambopata. They are known as the largest predator in the Amazonian rainforest.

With a length of 4 meters as an adult and the distinctive black color appearance, Black Caimans are excellent hunters with a good sense of hearing and sight, along with the capability to camouflage during night time.

As for their diet, Black Caimans mostly feed on catfish and piranhas but occasionally when they get the chance, they go after larger animals like deer, turtles and capybara.

Giant otter

Giant otters might be cute-looking creatures at first glance with their slender body, brown fur and big eyes. But don’t be fooled because giant otters are known as the top predators of Amazonian jungles after the Black Caiman!

Also known as the river wolf, giant otters are the largest otters in the world, growing up to 1.8 meters in length as an adult. They are also excellent swimmers and thrive in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. As for their diet, fish is the priority. However, giant otters are a threatened species because they are hunted for fur.

Jaguar

It is not wrong to say that Jaguar is the most beautiful predator in the Amazonian jungles. Being the third largest cats in the world, adult Jaguars can grow up to 2 meters in length and weigh around 50-90 kilograms.

They are also good swimmers unlike the other cats. Jaguars are solitary creatures too, who usually mark their territory by clawing the trees they get on. As for their diet, it consists of black caimans, fish, deer, turtles and capybaras.

Puma

The puma is another one of the exquisite animals in Tambopata National Reserve. They are not heavy like Jaguars, but an adult grows up to 2,4 meters in length. They have great hunting skills and will climb trees and wait for the perfect prey silently, mostly at night.

However, they have more similarities with the domestic cats, for example, Pumas are not able to roar. As for their diet, it consists of monkeys, capybaras, birds and wild pigs.

Red Howler Monkey

The Red Howler Monkey, the largest of the howler monkeys, is frequently spotted in Tambopata. The early-morning howls of these Red Howler Monkeys can be heard up to 5 kilometers away.

Their thick, brownish-red fur is colored differently depending on the animal’s age and habitat. The morning is when red howlers are most active, moving in groups in search of a feeding opportunity. Flowers, leaves, and various fruit varieties are top priorities in their diet.

Tambopata or Manu

Friday, 4 November, 2022 | Sin categoría | 0 Comentarios

If you are someone who loves wildlife, then visiting Peru – the biodiversity capital of the world is a must! There lies the Tambopata National Reserve and Manu National Park.
Although both are very tempting choices, you might be considering what is the best – Tambopata or Manu?

Manu National Park

Manu National Park, which is also declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve makes up a large part of the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. The area is well-protected because it is very difficult to reach Manu, however, the adventure of reaching itself will be a thrilling experience.

Manu National Park can be accessed easily when you get a 40-minute flight from Cusco to Boca Manu, then you have to drive for 7-8 hours to reach the entrance of Manu National Park. The alternative is going from Cusco to Atalaya by a 10-hour bus ride, then an 8-hour boat rides to Boca Manu and then driving to the Manu National Park entrance.

Additionally, it is recorded that there are 222 species of mammals, 99 species of reptiles, 140 species of amphibians, 1000 species of birds, 210 species of fish, and over 2300 insects in Manu. However, the most commonly sighted animals are Jaguar, Puma, Macaws, Giant Otter, Giant Anteater, Brazilian Tapir and Marsh Deer.

The lodges in Manu National Park are the most basic, with fewer amenities because it is very difficult to bring the supplies in. Make sure to check the Cock of the Rock Lodge, Manu Wildlife Center and Pantiacolla Lodge.

Tambopata National Reserve

Tambopata National Reserve is also one of the biggest parts of the Peru Amazonian Rainforest. It is not very challenging like the Manu National Park. For ease of access you should go with Tambopata National Reserve, especially if you have limited time in exploring the Amazonian wilderness.

Also, Tambopata National Park can be easily accessed when you go through Puerto Maldonado. From Cusco, it is a 1-hour flight to Puerto Maldonado, and from there you can get to the jungle lodge that you have booked in Tambopata through a scenic boat ride in the Madre de Dios River.

Additionally, it is recorded that about 160 species of mammals, 100 species of reptiles and amphibians, 630 species of birds, 179 species of fish and more than 1000 species of butterflies are there in the Tambopata. However, the most commonly sighted animals are Black Caiman, Giant Otter, Jaguar, Puma, Ocelot, Peruvian Spider Monkey, Macaws, Toucans and South American Tapir. The Tambopata National Reserve has a place that counts the highest concentration of brilliantly coloured parrots and macaws in the world which are known as clay licks.

The lodges in Tambopata are much more advanced with all the necessary supplies that can quickly be bought in. Make sure to check the Posada Amazonas, Refugio Amazonas, Heath River Wildlife Center and The Tambopata Research Center.

Conclusion

If you are still stuck on the question – Tambopata or Manu let us summarize some things to make your decision easier.

Manu National Park is a great place if you love thrilling, time-taking wildlife adventures that have limited luxuries and require more than a week of your time.

However, if you only have like four days to spare, you should go with Tambopata, particularly if you want to see the famous clay licks that the National Geography give its spotlight on.
