The Tambopata National Reserve; An exotic natural paradise:
The Tambopata National Reserve, is a natural area of Peru, located in the department of Madre de Dios. It protects numerous habitats, from the Andean highlands that surround the headwaters of the rivers, through some of the last cloud forests, to the rainforests of the lowlands of the Amazon basin.
More than 1300 species of birds (including 32 species of parrots, 10% of the world total), 200 varieties of mammals, 90 species of frogs, 1200 types of butterflies, 94 species of fish, 135 types of ants and 10 000 varieties of Ferns are protected within this reserve, and scientists continue to discover new species at every moment.
In the reserve, walk on platforms and bridges 30 meters above ground level, appreciate the majesty of nature on the trails of the jungle and quiet waterways, look for alligators and river otters, and draw lines for Amazonian fish such as the piranhas. Rest in your hammock as the sun sets and then plunge into the jungle at night, when many of your creatures are activated.
At first, you will enter the jungle and see only an undifferentiated mass of green. But a few days in the company of an expert guide will train your eye to detect different species of plants, trees and insects and tune your ear to hear the calls of exotic wildlife. It is no exaggeration to say that a trip to the Amazon rain forest of Tambopata will probably change the way you think about the land and your place in it.
Main attractions of the Tambopata National Reserve:
Lake Sandoval is one of the main attractions of the reserve. In this sanctuary located a short distance from the Tambopata River, birds of all kinds fly, monkeys swinging among the trees, crocodiles, otters and turtles swim and sunbathe.
Lake Sandoval can be visited as part of a day trip from Puerto Maldonado or as an activity with a lodge near the jungle.
Macaws and Parakeets clay lick:
Located throughout the reserve, multiple clay lacquers or natural clay formations attract birds and mammals. The best known is the Collpa de Guacamayos, where different species of birds arrive after sunrise to enjoy the mineral salts.
The macaws, the parrots and the green, blue, red and yellow parakeets fly by the hundreds, creating a colorful and cacophonic spectacle that is truly a marvel to behold. If your priority is to visit a clay lick on a trip to Tambopata.
Tree canopy (tree canopy towers):
It is one thing to explore the jungle at ground level, where the trees rise like cathedrals wrapped in lush vegetation. It is a totally different world at the level of the arboreal canopy, 25 to 40 meters above the ground, with an infinite forest that stretches before your eyes like a lush green sea. Fruits and flowers attract birds and small animals, which nest there to keep themselves safe from larger predators. The monkeys swing from the branches, leaving a green whisper in their wake. You can witness this wonderful natural life visiting Tambopata.
Descent of rivers or rafting (whitewater rafting):
Trip to the edge of the Tambopata River, a trip on a raft, is physically challenging, where you can appreciate the biodiversity of our Amazon rainforest.
Visit the aboriginal communities:
In the virgin forests of the department of Madre de Dios, there are many indigenous families. Almost all are incorporated into civilization by evangelical missionaries, but they retain much of their ancestral customs. This native population has many myths and legends, and a great diffusion of popular medicine and curiosity based on the large number of medicinal plants that exist. Visit one of the indigenous families and live with them so you can experience experiential tourism.
Day 01: Puerto Maldonado Town – Monte Amazónico Lodge – Monkey Island – Night Activity (Alligators)
Reception at the airport or bus stationand transfer to our office in the town of Puerto Maldonado, for relevant information about the tour in the jungle.
Then we transfer you to the port of the Madre de Dios River where we will get the boat and a trip of an hour to reach our lodge, where a welcome meeting a refreshing fruit juice of our región will be waiting for all our group and then installation in our respective rooms.
After a short rest you will have a hikking into the jungle for about two hours in the dense tropical forest and guided by an expert local guide to observe medicinal plants and trees like the Lupuna that reaches up to 70 meters in height and its trunk can reach more than 3 meters in diameter, with tabular roots.
At present, its wood is used mainly to make furniture, although the inhabitants of the zones where this tree is found have been using them for many decades to build canoes and rafts.
Its seeds, leaves and resin are used as medicinal herbs to cure, among, fever, asthma, diarrhea, dysentery or kidney problems. Even in some places like Brazil, the bark infusion is used to treat cancer and inflammation. Due to its size and presence it occupies a very important position in the ecosystem of the Amazon rainforest.

likewise you may observe some species of wild animals such as toucans, orioles, parrots, monkeys, snakes, butterflies, etc.
You will have the opportunity to experience the magic of our Amazon Rainforest within Tambopata National Reserve protected under Peruvian laws (278.000 thousand hectares)
After lunch, we will visit the “Monkey´s island”, located i front of our lodge across the madre de Dios River, at this place there are differents species of monkeys such as Brown Capuchin, squirrel monkey, saddle back Tamarin and white Capuchin, all of them in the island, after activity we will return to the lodge.
In the night we go to do a nocturnal activity (a walk night) in search of black and white caimans folowing the river edge, at this time we will need to bring a headlight, likewise with a bit of luck we may see the capibara, the world´s largest rodent that can weight 60 kilos impresive family of our peruvian cuy (Guinea Pig); back to the lodge, dinner and night at the lodge.
Day 02: Sandoval lake (Giant Otters) – Night Walk (Giant Spiders, amphibians, insects…)
After early breakfast will do a short boat ride to the entrance of the Lake Sandoval, after checking at the check point we will walk 3 kilometers to the lake Sandoval (Piranha habitat) one of the largest in the Tambopata Reserve, after the nice walking the guide will get a rowing boat where we will have our navigation on the lake to appreciate many species of birds and monkeys species (Hoatzin Cormorant Jacanas, herons, eagles, howlers monkey, squirrel monkey, black capuchin monkey, tamarins and sloths), likewise we will meet small families of Otters (almost two meters long) animals in danger of extinction, return to the lodge to enjoy our lunch.
In the evening we will do a night walk where we can appreciate the diversity of insects, amphibians, reptiles, giants spiders and tarantulas, butterflies, luminous and phosphorescent plants, among others, dinner and rest.
Day 03: Canopy Walk Activity – Back to Puerto Maldonado Town.
Very early morning we do the canopy walk-way and this will let us to see the rainforest from a differents perspective, at about 30 meters high, the bridge will allows us to appreciate nature from a high altitude, we will have a panoramic view of the Madre De Dios River, likewise from our platforms you can observe differents species of birds such us toucans, macaws, tanagers, orioles, among others, this will be a wonderful experience.
After breakfast we come back to the town of Puerto Maldonado.
