Tambopata – Eco Jungle 03 Days: Monkey Island – Sandoval Lake – Canopy

Overview

Tambopata National Reserve, is a natural area of Peru, located in the department of Madre de Dios. It protects numerous habitats, from the Andean highlands that surround the headwaters of the rivers, through some of the last cloud forests to the rainforests of the lowlands of the Amazon basin.

More than 1300 species of birds (including 32 species of parrots, 10% of the world total), 200 varieties of mammals, 90 species of frogs, 1200 types of butterflies, 94 species of fish, 135 types of ants and 10 000 varieties of Ferns are protected within this reserve, and scientists continue to discover new species at every moment.

Day 1

Day 01: Puerto Maldonado – Monkey Island – Night Activity

We will pick you up from the bus station or Airport at Puerto Maldonado and will transfer you to our office, we will then drive you in our transport to the boat pier, here we will take you by boat to travel down the Madre de Dios river to arrive at our lodge, then a refreshing fruit juice drink in our lodge.

We will set you up in your room, a quick rest, after we will start our tour going to walk in the jungle where we will get the lush vegetation (Some trees are 500 years old), birds such as parrots, toucans, macaws, monkeys, snakes, and a variety of insects like butterflies.

Return to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch, we visit the “Monkey Island”, here you will see a great diversity of monkeys such as Capuchin, Tamarins and Squirrel monkeys are frequent here, some of them comes closer to us and even you can feed them¡

In the night we go for caiman search, they are generally on the banks of Madre de Dios River this time will need to bring a flashlight. With luck we may see the capybara the world’s largest rodent that can weigh 60 kilos impressive family of the Peruvian Cuy; back to the lodge, dinner and night at the lodge.

Day 2

Day 02: Sandoval lake – Night Walk

After breakfast, we will do a short boat ride to the entrance of the Sandoval lake, after checking at the check point we will walk 3 kilometers (2 miles aprox.) to the Lake Sandoval (piranha habitat) one of the largest in the Tambopata National Reserve.

After the nice walk the guide will get a rowing boat where we will have our navigation on the lake to appreciate many different birds and monkeys Species (Hoatzin cormorant Jacanas, puma heron, eagles, howler monkey, squirrel monkey, black capuchin, tamarins and sloths)

Maybe we will meet with the family of giant river otters (almost two meters long) they are in danger of extinction and the largest alligator recorded over 4 meters long, return to the lodge to enjoy a typical lunch.

In the evening we will do a night walk where we can appreciate the diversity of insect, amphibians, reptiles and other nocturnal animals.

Day 3

Day 03: Canopy – Puerto Maldonado

Wake up early morning in the jungle.

The Canopy Walk-Way, will let us to see the rainforest from a different perspective, at  about 30 meters high, the bridges will allow us to appreciate nature from a high altitude, we will have a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios river, from the platform you can observe different species of birds such as toucans, macaws among others.

Return for breakfast and return to the city.
